The Unerring Compass
Mythos spell – Binding of Certainty
A grim spell for Call of Cthulhu.
"I would rather lose my north than see yours falter." – Anonymous cultist
Stats
- Cost: 12 MP, 1d6 Sanity
- Casting Time: 1 minute (10 rounds)
Effect
The caster ritually surrenders their innate sense of direction, trading it for a target’s unerring certainty. For the duration of the spell (until the next sunrise or until the caster succeeds on a Hard POW×5 check to regain their bearings), the caster treats all Navigation, Orienteering, and Survival checks that rely on spatial awareness as if they had a skill of 0% (automatic failure) and suffers a –20% penalty to any other skill requiring left/right discrimination (e.g., Firearms, Throw). The chosen target gains a +30% bonus to all Navigation and Orienteering checks and can never become lost while the spell persists; they always know the exact direction toward any previously visited landmark or the caster’s current location, even through magical obscuration.
Consequences
Each casting erodes the caster’s internal map. After three uses, the caster must make a Sanity check (1/1d6) or permanently lose their sense of direction, treating all Navigation checks as 0% permanently and suffering a permanent –10% penalty to Dexterity-based skills. Continued use attracts the attention of entities that feed on disorientation (e.g., byakhee or unseen horrors), increasing the chance of a random encounter by 10% per casting.
Deeper Magic
The working draws upon the fractured geometry of Yog-Sothoth’s realm, where direction is a fluid concept. The wet stone and hot iron scent noted during the ritual is the residual smell of the interstellar pathways being tugged, a reminder that the caster is borrowing certainty from a cosmos that does not care for mortal bearings.
