Echoes of the Unremembered

Mythos spell – Return of the Forgotten

A classic spell for Call of Cthulhu.

The thing you lost will find you, as if it never left.

Stats

  • Cost: 12 MP, 1d6 Sanity
  • Casting Time: 1 minute
  • Participants: 2 (caster and willing conduit)

Effect

The caster invokes a forgotten current that threads through the veil of time and space. Upon completion, the spell locates the item most recently stolen from its rightful owner and transports it to the person who needs it most, irrespective of distance. The object appears warm to the touch, radiating a faint, inexplicable heat that seems to come from the object itself rather than any external source. If the caster holds the item, it materializes in their hand; otherwise it manifests in the target’s immediate vicinity, laid upon the nearest surface.

Consequences

Each casting gnaws at the caster’s mind, adding an additional 1d6 Sanity loss beyond the listed cost. Repeated use also erodes the caster’s personal memories: for every three castings, the character suffers a –5% penalty to Spot Hidden and any skill that relies on recall of details. The lingering warmth becomes a phantom sensation that follows the caster, reminding them of the thin line they have crossed. The spell’s echo draws the attention of indifferent elder entities; the GM may introduce subtle, unsettling omens after multiple uses.

Deeper Magic

The spell does not simply return the stolen thing; it also silently erases the victim’s memory of the theft, leaving them with a vague sense of something missing but no recollection of loss. This memory‑shrouding is a hidden cost that binds the caster’s life force to the object. Should the returned item be destroyed within 24 hours, the caster suffers a backlash of 1d10×10 damage and an additional 2d6 Sanity loss, as the severed link ruptures violently.
