The Body Recalls

Necromantic Communion

A epic spell for Generic.

The dead do not forget their dying. They only wait for someone fool enough to remember with them.

Stats

  • Casting: A spoken vow into the corpse's ear while pressing your forehead to its brow; requires the body to be mostly intact
  • Range: Touch, and you experience what the dead experienced
  • Duration: Precisely sixty heartbeats—theirs, not yours

Effect

You inhabit the corpse's final minute of life, experiencing every sensation, thought, and emotion as if they were your own. You see through their eyes, feel their wounds opening, taste their last breath. The corpse's body becomes a frozen tableau during this communion—utterly still, breath held, heart suspended between beats. To any observer, you appear dead yourself. Birds will not fly over you during this working; they circle wide or land and wait. When the minute expires, you return gasping, and the corpse shows signs of disturbance—displaced items, different position, sometimes tears on cheeks long dried. You retain perfect memory of what the dead person knew in that final minute, including the face of a killer, the location of hidden things, or final words left unspoken.

Escalation

By offering a portion of your own lifespan (manifesting as sudden silver in your hair, a new scar that wasn't there before, or years carved into your face), you can reach further back—five minutes, an hour, or even the entire final day. The corpse remains suspended in its deathlike state throughout, and the disturbance upon your return becomes more pronounced: the body may sit up, reach out, or speak with your voice. You risk losing yourself in their memories; each minute beyond the first demands a test of will to remember which death is truly yours. Those who push too far sometimes return changed, carrying the dead's mannerisms, fears, or unfinished business as if they were born to them.
