Echo of the Last Breath
Mythos spell: Echo of the Last Breath
A classic spell for Call of Cthulhu.
Stats
- Cost: 6 MP, 2d6 Sanity
- Casting Time: 1 minute
- Participants: 1
Effect
The caster lights a single candle—no electric light may be used. Within the candle’s glow, the spell reaches out to a nearby corpse and siphons the final minute of its existence. The caster then relives that minute from the corpse’s perspective, seeing the scene as if inside the body, hearing the breath, and feeling the heat of the dying flesh. The relived minute is fully experienced, but the caster’s body remains in its original state until the spell ends.
Consequences
Each use of the spell drains 2d6 sanity immediately, reflecting the psychic strain of inhabiting a dying body. Repeated use worsens the loss, eventually causing permanent sanity damage of 1/1d6 per use beyond the first. The spell’s loop can only be broken by the caster who first invoked it; if any other investigator uses it, they become trapped in the cycle and cannot stop it. The trapped caster will continue to relive the final minute until the original caster dies, at which point the loop ends and the trapped caster is released but forever marked by the experience.
Deeper Magic
The candle’s flame must never be extinguished; if the flame goes out, the spell collapses, leaving the caster in an abrupt, disorienting void. The caster is bound to the corpse’s final fate—if the corpse’s last breath was taken by a supernatural hand, the caster will later encounter that same hand, creating a loop of predestination. Only by confronting the original cause of the corpse’s death can the caster truly end the spell.
