The Unwed Band

Artifact · 1920s

A grim magic item for Call of Cthulhu.

"Two souls never met, yet bound by this metal."

Stats

  • Origin: Forged in a forgotten jeweler's workshop, 1923, after a double betrothal went awry.
  • Sanity Loss: 1/1d3

Description

A simple gold band, its inner surface engraved with two names that never belonged to the same person. The metal feels unnaturally cold, and a faint scent of wilted roses lingers when it is held. Birds refuse to fly within ten feet of the ring, veering sharply as if hitting an invisible wall.

Powers

Echo of the Unmet: Once per scene, the wearer may consult the ring about a missed connection or lost love. They gain a +20% bonus to Psychology, History, or Occult for that specific check. After using the power, the wearer must make a Sanity check (1/1d3); on a failure they gain 1 point of temporary insanity (e.g., a fleeting dread of birds).

Price of Use

Each use of the ring pulls the wearer closer to the tragedy of the two never‑met lovers. After the third successful use, the wearer suffers a permanent loss of 1d3 Sanity and acquires the lingering madness ‘Delusion: I am destined to meet someone who never existed.’ The ring’s cold grip tightens, and the bird‑avoidance radius expands by five feet.
