Echo of the Forked Path

Mythos spell: Temporal Echo

A grim spell for Call of Cthulhu.

I saw myself choose the road I never walked.

Stats

  • Cost: 4 MP, 1d3 Sanity
  • Casting Time: 1 full round
  • Participants: 1 caster

Effect

You tear a thin veil between timelines and summon the version of yourself that made the opposite choice at a pivotal moment. The alternate self appears in a space adjacent to you for 1d4 rounds, possessing your statistics but with inverted personality traits (e.g., brave where you are cautious). It can act, speak, or offer a single piece of advice before fading. All witnesses, including you, have been subtly paid to forget the event; any memory of the summoning fades after the scene ends, leaving only a vague sense of deja vu. All clocks within a 30‑foot radius instantly diverge by exactly eleven minutes (some run fast, some slow) for the duration of the effect.

Consequences

Each casting costs 1d3 Sanity in addition to the MP cost. Repeated use erodes the boundary between your selves: after three castings you must make a POW roll or begin hearing the alternate self’s voice constantly, imposing a –10% penalty on all Skill rolls. After six castings you risk a permanent dissociation, treating your alternate self as a separate NPC that may act independently.

Deeper Magic

The spell relies on a natural temporal fissure that bleeds when the ley lines of possibility intersect. The eleven‑minute clock shift is a side‑effect of the fissure’s attempt to synchronize; knowledgeable occultists can calculate the fissure’s location by noting which timepieces run fast or slow.
