Eadric Fenstride
Chronomancy
A classic spell for Generic.
I stand where I could have been, and the water remembers both paths.
Stats
- Casting: A whispered vow spoken over still, reed‑lined water, the caster’s breath fogging the surface.
- Range: Touch – the caster must press palm to the river‑mud and feel the echo of their own footfall.
- Duration: Until the summoned self fades back into the current or the caster reclaims the forked choice.
Effect
The spell reaches backward along the caster’s own thread of time and draws forth the version of themselves that took the other road at a crucial juncture. The apparition rises from the reeds and standing water, half‑transparent and dripping with river mud, bearing a second, older set of measurements etched faintly on its armor or skin – the record of the path not walked. Those nearby feel a sudden, unsettling deja vu, as if they have already been paid to forget this encounter, yet they cannot recall why. The echo self can offer a single piece of advice, lend a hand, or share a skill drawn from the untaken life before it sighs and slips back into the current.
Escalation
If the caster fuels the working with a cherished memory or a precious token, the summoned self solidifies, gaining substance enough to act for several heartbeats. The hidden measurements become visible to all, glowing like wet runes in the mud, revealing secrets of the forsaken choice – a glimpse of alternate outcomes, a hidden danger, or a lost opportunity. In this heightened state the echo can fight alongside the caster or attempt to steer events toward the path it once lived, fading only when the borrowed time expires.
