The Unknowing Ring

Artifact · 1920s

A grim magic item for Call of Cthulhu.

"The cost is a secret kept even from myself," whispered the man, and the band snapped to dust.

Stats

  • Origin: New York, 1922
  • Sanity Loss: 1/2d6

Description

A simple gold wedding band, unadorned save for a faint, almost invisible engraving of two intertwined hearts. The metal feels unnaturally cool to the touch, and no one who has worn it can remember who the original pair were or how the ring was acquired. Some say it was forged in a midnight workshop by a desperate alchemist, while others whisper it is a relic from a vanished cult.

Powers

While worn, the ring keeps its bearer in a state of perpetual uncertainty regarding the price paid for it. If the wearer, or anyone else, attempts to state or even consider the exact amount of money that sealed the marriage, the ring's spell breaks: the band fractures into shards, a chilling wind sweeps over the wearer, and a 1d4 sanity loss is suffered immediately. The ring’s effect can only be activated again if the wearer refuses to acknowledge the cost for a full 24 hours.

Price of Use

Each time the wearer activates the ring’s protective silence, 1/2d6 sanity is lost. Additionally, for 24 hours the wearer suffers a –2 penalty to all Charisma-based skills and a –2 penalty to Perception, as the mind struggles to keep the secret of the price hidden.
