Merrick Waveroot

Halfling Ferryman · Level 1

A whimsical NPC for D&D 5e.

A penny for your soul, even if the water's gone!

Stats

  • Role: Gatekeeper of the Forgotten River
  • Bond: He owes a debt to the river spirit that vanished with the water.
  • Flaw: He insists on exact change, even from ghosts.

Appearance

Merrick is a spry halfling with a weather‑worn straw hat perched atop a mop of tangled brown hair. His patched leather coat is stained with dried mud, and a silver oar—more decorative than functional—hangs from his belt. He clutches a kelp‑green ledger bound with sea‑weed twine, its pages fluttering like restless fish.

Secret

The receipt he forever carries bears the signature of Lady Mirabel of the Dry Plains, a noble who never owned a boat. The forged signature binds the ferryman to an ancient curse: he must collect the toll forever, even though the river ran dry a century ago.

Hook

Rumors whisper that paying Merrick’s overdue toll—exactly one copper per lost soul—will cause the dried riverbed to shift, revealing a hidden passage to a forgotten shrine of water spirits. Adventurers willing to barter with a stubborn ferryman might gain access to treasure, or unleash whatever still lingers beneath the cracked stones.
