**Debt Inscription.** As an action, you write the name of a creature you can see within 60 feet and an amount of gold (up to 500 gp) on the ledger’s chalk‑streaked pages, which are bound with thin upland soil and flint. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15) or become magically bound by the recorded debt, taking 2d6 psychic damage and being compelled to pay the amount within 24 hours. If the debt is paid, the damage ends; if not, at the end of the 24‑hour period the target takes 4d6 psychic damage and is frightened until the debt is settled. This use costs 1 charge. **Ledger’s Reckoning.** Once per day, you can choose a debt recorded on the ledger that remains unpaid and, as an action, force the debtor to make a Charisma saving throw (DC 15). On a failure, the owed gold is magically transferred to you and the debtor loses it; on a success, the debt is voided but you suffer 1d8 psychic damage. This use costs 1 charge.

The ledger was commissioned by Chancellor Vyslavov, a stern magistrate of the highland provinces, who demanded a means to balance the endless flow of taxes and fines that seeped through the chalk‑filled chambers of his office. Artisans pressed thin soil from the surrounding uplands into stiff sheets, set flint veins as binding strips, and dusted the surface with powdered chalk so that each entry glowed faintly in dim light. Legends whisper that the ledger can anticipate a villager’s need for a loan before the coin clinks in their purse, sealing a promise that even the most stubborn debtor cannot deny.

Curse

The ledger’s power exacts a price. While you possess it, you have disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks made against merchants and traders, who sense the weight of unspoken obligations. Moreover, each time you record a debt you gain a cumulative –1 penalty to saving throws against being charmed, to a maximum of –3.
