The Hook
A meteor shower lit the sky last night—but one stone didn’t burn out. It struck Mount Galchwyd, and now a sickly green glow pulses from the crater. The town of Bryn Sullyr, already choking on sulfur from the mines, reports livestock mutilated in the fields. The local alchemist, a gaunt woman named Cerys, hires you to investigate before dawn, when "the door in the sky" aligns.
Background
The meteor is a birthing pod for star spawn. These emissaries of Yigrnash, an entity older than gods, are terraforming the valley into a portal for their master. Cerys knows more than she admits: her "tonics" are distilled meteor fragments, addicting the town to Yigrnash’s influence. By dawn, the star spawn will complete their ritual—and Bryn Sullyr will be the first patch of a new cosmic world.
The Threat
Star Spawn (use **Mage** stats, CR 6). They lurk in the crater, etching alien geometry into the earth. Their minds are linked; damaging one causes all others within 60 ft to shudder visibly (revealing hidden ones). They prioritize non-addicted targets, telepathically hissing, "You are not of the pattern."
1. The Alchemist’s Hut
Cerys’ workspace reeks of sulfur and spoiled milk. Shelves groan with vials of glowing green liquid (DC 14 Arcana: these contain pulverized meteorite). If confronted, Cerys begs for "just one more dose" (DC 12 Insight: she’s terrified of withdrawal). A ledger reveals shipments to the mine foreman.
2. The Sulfur Pits
Toxic fumes swirl over bubbling yellow pools (DC 10 CON save every turn or take 1d6 poison damage). Addicted miners lurch through the mist, eyes glowing faintly (use **Cultist** stats, but they take 1d6 psychic damage when struck). One clutches a jagged meteorite shard—touching it (DC 15 CHA save) implants whispers of Yigrnash.
3. The Sky Mirror
A natural obsidian slab reflects the crater’s glow. Staring into it (DC 13 WIS save) shows a vision of the earth unraveling into starlight. A successful DC 15 Investigation check reveals the reflection moves slightly out of sync—this is where the star spawn entered.
4. The Crater’s Maw
The meteor glows like a dying ember, its surface writhing with star spawn. The air vibrates with a discordant hum (DC 12 CON save or lose reaction each round). Three star spawn defend the meteor; destroying it before dawn ends the ritual.
Climax
At dawn, the meteor cracks open. Yigrnash’s eye peers through—a void flecked with sickly stars. The star spawn chant as the ground liquefies (DC 15 DEX save or sink 1d4 rounds into quicksand-like ichor). Destroying the meteor severs the connection; hesitating lets Yigrnash imprint its will on one PC (DC 17 CHA save or gain flaw: "The stars will have us all").
Aftermath & Rewards
If the meteor is destroyed, Bryn Sullyr’s sulfur vents seal overnight—but Cerys and the miners scream for days as the "light leaves them." The party finds a **Periapt of Proof Against Poison** fused to a meteorite chunk. If Yigrnash’s influence remains, the town vanishes by the next full moon, replaced by a perfectly circular lake.
Scaling Notes
Weaker: Reduce star spawn to **Cult Fanatics** (CR 2); miners are **Commoners**. Stronger: Add a Star Spawn Mangler (CR 5); the meteor has 100 HP and explodes on death (4d6 radiant damage).
